Phineas Gage Book Report

Title: Phineas Gage

Author: John Fleischman

Genre: Non-fiction/Biography

Way back in 1848 a railroad worker named Phineas Gage had a horrible accident that led to many scientific discoveries.  Phineas was a foreman that survived an explosives accident despite a gruesome brain injury.  He went on to make a so called “complete recovery”, and was able to travel the world obtaining many different jobs.  The accident changed not only him but also people’s ideas about the brain.

The theme of Phineas Gage was luck.  The author thinks that Phineas was lucky to go on and pursue multiple jobs.  I agree with the author that Phineas was lucky but for a different reason.  I believe he was lucky that the rod entered in the exact place in that area that wouldn’t kill him.  I think that luck is there but it is fate helping or harming you and is uncontrollable

Overall, I like this book.  Some parts were a little slow and dull but most were good.  I especially liked the part where it told about how the rod went through Phineas’s head.  It was extremely interesting and easy to understand.  I would rate this book four stars because it has its ups and its downs.  If I were to recommend this book to someone, it would be to older kids, such as eight or ninth graders, that are more interested in the brain and can understand some of the book’s complex parts better.
